Some quick thoughts on the second year of Musical Underground Ottawa, and a congratulations to David, who won this year’s guitar!

Underground in the Underpass
For the last session, we teamed up with Sarah Gelbard and Impromptu Playground. Musical Underground Ottawa has always been about creating something unexpected in public spaces, so it was a chance to expand on that theme. Sarah and her team had the idea of starting with an uninviting space – an underpass – and giving it life.
It made for an interesting addition, though it may have been daunting – unlike every other session, no passers-by stopped to interact with the project. Usually each afternoon’s players were a mix of people that came because they heard of it, and people who were just walking by.
But, the whole afternoon had a favourite feature from other sessions: listeners. The best times were when a small crowd gathered around the people playing, and lingered for a bit. We had an underpass audience for the whole afternoon and enough musicians to keep the music going, so it was great.
So for 2014 we added another 50 or so musicians, for over 100 between the two years of the project. A huge thank you to all of you. You can watch the last session here: http://musicalundergroundottawa.com/videos/
